Down Syndrome Test

What is Down’s Syndrome: Down's syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality to affect babies. As Down's syndrome can have a major impact on families, many parents-to-be want to know if they are expecting a baby with the condition. The American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that screening test should be offered to all pregnant women regardless of age.

First Trimester: PAPP–A, FREE ß-HCG

The Dual Screen test is valid between 9 to 13 weeks of pregnancy has significant utility in first trimester prenatal screening of Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) and other chromosomal anomalies. The false positive rate is 5% but the detection of Down syndrome is as high as 85 – 90% Ideal time: 10 to 13 weeks Specimen: 3 ml of serum TAT: 2 to 3 days

SecondTrimester: AFP, ß-HCG, FREE ESTRIOL

The Triple Screen test is valid between 14 to 22 weeks and used for prenatal screening of Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edward’s Syndrome (Trisomy 18) and open neural tube defects. The approximate detection rate with this test is 55 – 65% with a false positive rate of 5% Ideal time: 15 to 20 weeks Specimen: 3 ml of serum TAT: 2 to 3 days

Quadruple Test: AFP, ß-HCG, FREE ESTRIOL, INHIBIN A

The Quadruple Test is valid between 14 to 22 weeks and used for prenatal screening of Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edward’s Syndrome (Trisomy 18) and open neural tube defects. The approximate detection rate with this test is 75 – 80% with a false positive rate of 5% Ideal time: 15 to 20 weeks Specimen: 3 ml of serum TAT: 2 to 3 days
